Bentley Mulsanne 2011

"The new Mulsanne is a modern vessel that captures the essence of the Bentley marque This is an elegant sport but it is certainly in character, providing business performance while at the luxurious cabin, advanced technology sitting quietly with artificial luxury .." Bentley Motors Chairman and Chief Executive, Dr Franz-Josef Paefgen

While paying homage to past great Bentley Mulsanne new brief to design and engineering team was to create a Bentley that represents the pinnacle of British luxury automobile.

The new Mulsanne, designed and engineered at Crewe from above-ground, reaffirmed the intention to create the Bentley marque's new flagship with a smooth performance, unparalleled level of luxury interiors and building skills for future coaches.

The return of the name underscores Bentley Mulsanne sporting heritage and passion for strength and speed. Does not reflect that perform better than Le Mans 24 Hour race legendary. Bentley has enjoyed success in six times at Le Mans, where the cars are powerful and reliable race has thundered down the long straight into the famous Mulsanne corner, from which the new model takes its name.

A pure expression of Bentley design

The design of the new Mulsanne is a unique blend of sportiness, elegance and solidity coachbuilt. Echoing Bentley S-Type of the 1950s, Mulsanne have bold frontal design is dominated by traditional Bentley matrix grille and prominent, classic round lamps with chrome surrounds an inner, flanked by two smaller groups outboard lights, all featuring the latest in lighting technology . 'Flying B' retractable radiator mascot iconic available as an option.

Long hood, short front overhang and long rear overhangs help to convey a sense of strength and movement, strengthened by the pelvic muscles and sculptured sharp lines that flow gracefully from front to rear wing. Uniquely designed 20-inch (and optional 21-inch) wheels strengthen Mulsanne's powerful, sporting stance.

Design Director Dirk van Braeckel explains the inspiration behind the distinctive appearance of this Mulsanne:
"The opportunity to design a new flagship Bentley is something given to the designer very little. The team set out to create a sculpted form that blended classic Bentley heritage cues with modern lines."

Body is produced in a new manufacturing facility at the headquarters of Bentley at Crewe where traditional metalworking skills, developed over six decades, is still used widely during nine weeks of the build process. This is the opposite of volume car production, building ... but the very symbol of Bentley.

Rear screen, for example, completely enveloped by the coachwork. It provides a line, perfect flows to the rear of the car, a beautiful complement to form the D-pillar - a complex curve can only be made by a skilled coach-builders. The complex shape of the aluminum front wing, possibly to achieve with a normal pressing technique, created using superforming, technology usually reserved for the aerospace industry. It also makes wings lighter, stiffer and provide exceptional surface definition. The new construction technique means designers can also include details such as the 'floating' LED tail lights elliptical, unique echo shape exhaust tailpipes.

To accentuate the beauty of bodywork, features Mulsanne 'brightware' exclusively in stainless steel polished, including the frame and grille treadplates matrix. Bentley is the only manufacturer in the world to do this.

The door handle combines traditional Bentley knurling 'to inboard their surface for enhanced grip, reflecting the company's typical attention to detail, temporarily. Sporting character of the Mulsanne reinforced by the front wing vents and wide oval exhaust pipe finisher.
Bentley has the world's customers unlimited options when commissioning their cars. There are more than 100 colors of paint in a range that includes everything from the legacy of an unusual color, special satin and pearlescent finish and duo-tone combinations. But the choice does not end there. Through the world of bespoke Bentley Mulliner, unique colors can exactly match the customer's vision and taste.

Luxury interiors meet the advanced technology

Latest in-car technology secretly placed in the Mulsanne's luxurious interior. A multimedia system with 60GB hard disk drive satellite navigation, audio / video, personal data, phone and Bluetooth ® connectivity. Dashboard houses the top of the screen 8-inch multimedia, subtly positioned behind the veneer doors electrically operated, while the bottom sits, stylish leather storage drawer media player with connectors for iPod, USB, Mini USB and 3.5mm aux.

A state-of-the-art 14-speaker audio system with Digital Signal Processing (DSP) and 6-CD autochanger is provided as standard while the Naim for Bentley premium audio system can be specified as an option. This forging of the two British luxury brands provides customers with the world's most powerful production car in the 2200 Watt amplifier, eight dedicated DSP modes and 20 custom-made speakers, delivering unmatched sound quality.

A keyless entry system allows multiple configurations personalization of pre-programmed and automatically set the radio stations, telephone books, chairs (including ventilation and massage modes, both front and rear), steering column and seat belt arrangement and even electrically operated curtains for rear seat side and rear windows. Keyless system operates with chrome door handle that combines a touch point to initiate communication with the key for verification and entry. The Mulsanne also features keyless start, have a button stop / start in the center console.

Bentley interior design team continues to develop and evolve a luxurious interior for their famous car, based on large-scale programs, research to identify the signature feature that has been established classic Bentley from 1920 to today.

Armed with an invaluable resource, Mulsanne design team which set the targets are very challenging for key characteristics such as interior design materials, odor, color and harmony handcrafting. Same target set for operational improvements and robustness of all control mechanisms. The result is a hand crafted interior that fully reflects the traditional values of Bentley, was executed with the highest standards.

As Head of Interior Design, Robin Page said:
"More than 170 hours - nearly half of the entire process of building - entrance to the craft section in the new Mulsanne In Crewe, Bentley is the opposite of how the mass production of -. We start where others stop."

The use of wood and leather hides have been significantly improved to create the cabin even more refined and luxurious. While the classic design features such as a bulls-eye air vents (now also installed in the rear compartment), high-quality mirror-matched wood veneers, leather hides and hand-finished stainless steel is maintained, they are mixed with new touches like the beautiful 'glass' switch.

Whole cabin wrapped in a 'ring of wood' waistrail with a panel cut from wood gracing the Mulsanne's dashboard. Call needle upside down in the instrument cluster evocative early Bentleys while the overall dashboard and console design is a subtle reminder of the Bentley wings motif.

Customers can choose from a wide selection of premium quality veneers, unbleached for a natural appearance, and marquetry two choices: picture frames and contemporary crossbanding. In accordance with the ethos of Bentley, customers can also choose from a virtually unlimited palette of hides skins, including 24 color 'standard', the three new Bentley. This option is unparalleled veneer, leather and hide the color of paint to ensure that the needs of all customers can be matched perfectly.
Following detailed customer feedback, the traditional tanning process has been re-instated to match the smell, rich leather used so evocative of a vintage Bentley. Only a very few suppliers have the ability to hide the whole world to do this.

Carpet from Bentley Mulsanne is unique to, increase fiber depth, density and feel improve the quality of the cabin. It is available in a variety of colors to complement each individual hide. Pure wool, pile in the Wilton-weave the mats can add a further touch of comfort and luxury.

Beautiful materials formed by craftsmen and women with experience of up to 40 years. Any steering wheel, for example, can take 15 hours to hand-stitch while the stainless steel gleams brightware so perfect thanks to the process of completing an intensive 10-hour. A wood veneer takes five weeks to turn around the root ball from rough to the full set of mirror-matched, well-polished leaves.

Re-engineered V8 engine and new chassis: power, refinement and efficiency

Bentley's powertrain engineers set three goals for the Mulsanne:
1) To generate a simple torque from very low revs that customers expect from a large Bentley
2) To maintain the highest level of improvement
3) To meet stringent environmental standards of today and the future through increased efficiency of the engine

While other powertrain configurations are considered early in the project, it soon became apparent that the targets can best be achieved with a completely revised version of the 6 ¾-liter V8 engine - the very configuration that has been used so successfully in the past. But for the new Mulsanne, all the major building blocks of the machine will comprehensively re-engineered to integrate the very latest technology.

Dr. Ulrich Eichhorn, Bentley Motors' Director of Engineering, explained the reasons behind the Mulsanne V8:
"Using our V8 guaranteed a great power at low revs and performance without the pressures that are the hallmarks of the Bentley flagship. But we also set our engineers a challenge to maintain a high level of improvement at any speed and, equally important, improving efficiency."

To achieve a significant reduction in fuel consumption and CO2. emissions, V8 Mulsanne saw the introduction of two new control system: cam phasing and, first for the ultra-luxury sector, variable displacement.

Pioneering the use of both technologies in combination allows the engine management system Mulsanne was not only to regulate breathing V8 engine for improved idle quality and torque delivery, but also to close the valve four of eight cylinders for maximum fuel economy when cruising.

Componentry including new lightweight pistons, forged connecting rods and crankshaft to reduce reciprocating mass and internal friction to improve engine response.

In the new Mulsanne, 6 ¾-liter V8 developing 512 PS (505 kW bhp/377) while a large torque (1020 Nm / 752 lb ft) now delivered early in 1750 rev / min. This is a dramatic improvement in the delivery of torque from idle and right across the rev range to make sure that only the press of the accelerator driver immediately rewarded with the acceleration in the characteristics, muffled V8 cuap and phenomenal.

This new technology comes with a new eight-speed automatic transmission which, for the first time at Bentley's flagship, comes with steering-wheel mounted paddleshift.

Overall, CO2 emissions and fuel consumption are reduced by more than 15 percent, in line with Bentley's commitment to the environment.

Incredible power and torque that comes with all-new chassis, unique to the new Mulsanne. Both the lighter and stiffer than the previous Bentley's flagship, the new chassis benefits both ride and handling.

Drive Dynamics Control the new system, which is operated by a rotary switch mounted next to the gearshift selector, can be used to select from three standard modes - Bentley, Sports and Leisure - offers a precise calibration of the suspension and steering system controls.

A fourth mode, 'Custom', allowing the driver to select settings bespoke through multimedia systems to 'tune' Mulsanne for the preferred style of driving.

A new air suspension system with Continuous Damping Control (CDC) to create an even smoother ride and comfort at low speeds, but can reduce the ride height Mulsanne automatically at high speeds to reduce lift and increasing aerodynamic stability. With 20-inch alloy wheels and 265/45 ZR 20 tires as standard, dynamic handling is assured. Customers can also opt for 21-inch, available in two styles, equipped with tires 265/40 ZR 21.
