A few days before Christmas, Volvo Cars treats the automotive world to start unwrapping the car that will shine brightly on the streets for years to come. Volvo S60 Concept cars provide glimpse of what the world's all-new Volvo S60 is will look like when it arrived in 2010.

"All-new S60 will be one of the strongest players in the segment where competition is keen," says Volvo Cars President and CEO Stephen Odell.

Coupe-inspired lines that gave the original S60 characteristic attitude even more clear in the next generation.

"Sporty design provides a visual promise of enthusiastic drive and I can assure you here and now that the all-new S60 will live up to the promise that the nature of the driving is better than in the previous Volvo cars .. The technology also will help you become a better driver and safer, "said Stephen Odell.
The concept car revealed that the Volvo Cars design team is to upgrade to the next level in the development of DNA products'.

"The exterior of this concept car gives a clear indication of what customers can expect from the all-new S60 On the inside we have even more daring -. There is a focus has been on creating a vision of the future in perspective a little longer," says Volvo Cars Design Director Steve Mattin.

Scandinavian inspiration and drama

The front of the S60 concept sports naturally enlarged iron mark in the trapezoidal grille. The grille itself has a somewhat new appearance with structured horizontal propellers add improvements to its shape.
Two DNA flanking the grille lamps emphasize the vertical attitude of the front and promote the V-shape hats. Sloping headlamps flow up the hood so the statue. Combined with a form of inverted trapezoidal lower air intake, this gives the concept car "faces" are very expressive.

"Dynamic and with considerable character, but without appearing aggressive. It is packed with inspiration from Scandinavian design and of the Swedish coast and sea cliffs. A thrilling blend of drama and sensuality," says Steve Mattin.

Viking longboat in the headlights

Headlights concept that unites the classic Scandinavian influences with modern high-tech.
In each of the headlamps, lamps sculpted to create an image of two miniature Viking long boats sailed side by side, one for main beam and one for dipped beam. When driving in darkness, the light reflected from the hidden, upward facing High Performance LED lights, front projected screen with ships' filled.

Double wave and sensational doors

Viewed from the side, trim coupe concept car roofline and window graphics along with the shoulder line entirely new lateral, forming a gentle double wave. Extending from the headlights to the tail, it adds emotional excitement and play with the surface and its highlights.
Both seven-spoke 20-inch wheels and low profile tread of the tire has been specially designed. Bronze-painted brake calipers matches "Warm Liquid Copper" livery.

Unique parallelogram rear door offers spectacular when they open and close. Opening the door was initiated by pressing the button and the movement began with the traditional way. In the next stage, the front also swings out of the car body and the door slid parallel to the side of the car until it reaches its final position with the rear wheels.

Inspiration from the race track

"In a model that will come, you will see more and more of us" cues racetrack "design of this car line does not end abruptly but rather form a continuous flow pattern inspired by a quick sweep of the race track .. In the concept car, this especially visible in the back, "says Steve Mattin.

Tail lights, which follow the curve of her shoulders back, is as advanced as the headlight. When disabled, the panel lights do not show traces of the traditional red or yellow. But when activated, the position marker lights, brake lights and turn indicators come in the correct color. The solid glass panels cut into horizontal "slices".

At the back there is also a diffuser which adjusts the speed of the vehicle pulled to provide a better aerodynamic properties.

Interior design shows the direction of future

With the interior of the Volvo S60 Concept, Volvo Cars design director Steve Mattin and his team display a variety of spectacular idea generation.

"You could say that we are showing the way we want to take in the future. The interior is without doubt the most exclusive we've ever made," says Steve Mattin.

The interior is packed with interesting details, which all together creates a mild feeling of Scandinavia fresh, full of visual harmony.

In the midst of a four-seater car sparkling jewel in the crown: the floating center stack is made of handmade, solid Orrefors crystal. Float like a wave, gentle calm of the instrument panel all the way to the rear seat backrest.

The driver-oriented environment

The entire driver's environment has been designed to give you a total and easy control.
Combined instrument also has a floating pile of center, almost weightless feel about it. The instrument was built in several layers.

"Speedometer is designed as a glass three-dimensional spiral low numbers seems closest to the eye and the figures seem to be drifting away as you accelerate. The idea is that the speedometer should provide a visual reminder of forward movement." Explains Steve Mattin.

Slim, leather upholstery floating

Floating theme continues in the concept car's sleek, lightweight contoured seat, made of soft leather Music Light with contrasting stitching. Seats are attached to the bottom of the center console and an inner threshold, which means that they do not actually touch the floor.

Both belts and armrests are integrated into the seat itself. Horse-tail slot back, first shown in the previous concept car, has a new design is slightly asymmetrical.

"The goal is to create an atmosphere of pleasant living room with a soft, invisible transfer between the various surfaces. For example, dark, tanned saddle leather on the floor ecological continue at the bottom of the door," relates Steve Mattin.

The top of the doors are faced with a genuine blond birch wood with the same color as the salt-and sun beach pier Scandinavian timber and driftwood. Two slit parallel to the wave-shaped bulge that forms part of a comfortable leather arm rests.

New technology to detect pedestrians in danger zone

S60 concept also presents the ground-breaking innovation safety, among others, can detect a pedestrian who stepped out onto the driveway - and the full power braking the car automatically activated if the driver does not respond to danger.
Technology, Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake and pedestrian detection, will be introduced on the all-new Volvo S60.

"Until now, we have focused on helping drivers avoid collisions with other vehicles Now we take a giant step forward with a system that also improve safety for road users-protected .. new sensor technology also allows for advanced from fifty percent to full automatic braking power . To our knowledge, none of our competitors have made such progress in this area, "said Thomas Broberg, Volvo Cars' safety experts.

Avoid collisions at speeds below 20 km / h

Speed of the car is meaning enough for the results of collisions with pedestrians. If the speed is down from 50 km / h to 30 km / h, the chance of survival is dramatically improved pedestrian.
"Our goal is that this new technology will help drivers avoid collisions with pedestrians at speeds below 20 km / h. If the car is driven faster, the goal is to reduce the impact speed as much as possible. In most cases, we can reduce the collision force of about 75 percent, "says Thomas Broberg.

This technology is also very beneficial in terms of rear-end impact with another vehicle. Studies show that half of all drivers who drive into another vehicle from behind did not brake before the collision.

In such cases, Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake can help avoid the collision entirely if the relative speed difference between the two vehicles is less than 25 km / h

Visual warning on head-up display

In emergency situations, the driver gets a warning first sounded together with the flashing lightin head-up display windshield that. In order to drive the reaction, immediately intuitive, visual warning is designed to look like brake lights that come on the front.

If the driver does not respond to warnings and the system judged that a collision is near, full braking power automatically activated car.

The main goal is still to early warnings that will be enough for the driver to brake or maneuver away from danger. Full automatic braking is an emergency measure that is only activated when a collision is imminent.

Upgraded Adaptive Cruise Control

Volvo Cars of Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) has now been upgraded with queue assist function.
The radar-based Adaptive Cruise Control maintains a set time gap to the vehicle in front of all the traffic, making it usable comfort-enhancing slow-moving queue system to restart and stop.

CO2 emissions 119g/km

Machines that Volvo Cars has chosen to Concept Volvo S60 is a 1.6-liter four-cylinder petrol unit using a high efficiency GTDi (Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection) technology and produces 180 horsepower.

In a conventional gasoline engine, fuel is injected into the inlet manifold before the inlet valve. With direct injection, however, fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber under high pressure.
Engines in combination with various other technical measures possible to reduce carbon dioxide emissions to 119 g / km (5.0 l/100 km).

Volvo Cars first production car with GTDi technology will be introduced in the second half of 2009.

Electric power steering, layered combustion and other measures
In addition to GTDi technology, the Volvo S60 Concept integrates the following technical features to bring CO2 emissions to 119 g / km:

Stratified combustion. The combustion chamber is designed so that fog is composed of the optimal mixture of air and fuel is formed around the spark plug, surrounded in turn by pure air. This allows the engine to operate with a surplus of air, thereby cutting fuel consumption.
Start / stop, the functionality will turn off the engine when the car stops.
PowerShift. Two manual gearboxes work in parallel, each governed by its own coupling.
EPA (Electrical Power Assisted Steering). In principle, an "electric servo" in which a conventional hydraulic pump has been replaced by an electric motor.
"Drive-Mode". Giving the driver the possibility to reduce fuel consumption through the "economy mode" that limits the function of a number of electrical or mechanical system selected.
Grille shutter. A wind deflecting panel that can be closed to reduce air drag when there is less need for air conditioning.
    Panel flat underbody.
The use of lightweight materials in automobile bodies.
